I have a customer with a Maytag Gas Range, MGR7775WS 2, R10414233. This unit doesn’t have an ignitor but has a spark mule for the lower oven and it doesn’t always light on the first try. Is this something to worry about and is there anything that can be done about it?

Blake, I would be sure they’re not on a GFCI circuit, and that your voltage check at the wall proved there is a valid ground. The area around the spark electrode can become diffuse with residue and might cause a ground problem for the spark, so look there as well. A couple of clicks to ignite isn’t all that significant of failure.

Also, the spark igniters will move away from the burn tube slightly over time casued by expansion and contraction from the heat. This causes poor ignition. I have many times carefully moved/ bent the metal part of the ingniter closer to the burn tube and it has fixed the issue. The manufactures has often suggested this to fix the issue. Just be careful not to break the igniter doing this.
