Refrigerator quits running and gets warm. Consumer hits it on the side with his hand and it starts up again and works fine for three or four days.

I would definitely be leaning towards temp control on this unit. Its a very common control to go bad.

Sounds like, cold control sticking. Or you may have a evaporator fan motor intermittently locking up with a bad bearing.. When you hit it it starts running again.
