I got a call from an irate customer. He told me that one of the local appliance technician companies came by to look at his fridge. The tech told him that either the ice maker or water inlet valve is bad. He suggested changing them both out. The tech was supposed to get back to him the next day with the price. He NEVER called back. His service charge was $98.00.
The customer finally called the company back, and asked them for details. They told him that they couldn’t get out to make the repair for 2 possibly 3 weeks. That is the main reason that he is upset. After paying them to diagnose the problem and blowing him off for a few weeks, he called me.
I contacted my supply house with the model number. They could have the parts for me in 2 days. HOWEVER, as always, before I go to make ANY repair, I like to “see” what I am up against. So, I go on the Internet and search the parts and installation advice. On this model, I couldn’t find an ice maker anywhere on the Internet. I already ordered the parts, so I know it has one. BUT, why can’t I find any information on it?
I appreciate the guidance that you guys offer. But, I don’t like to bother you, every time I have a problem.
Q. Do you have any information about this ice maker?
Q. Is it hard to install?
I listened and allowed my customer to vent his frustration. I feel his pain. I actually tried to talk him out of putting in a new ice maker. He is already out $98.00. Plus ( as I told him ). The parts alone are about $250.00 plus my service fee.
I really felt sorry for the guy. So, I gave him a break on my service.

This refrigerator was actually made by L-G. I found the ice maker and is a part number 5989JA0002Q. It is fairly easy to replace and readily available at any distributor that sells L-G appliance parts.FYI i did find it on searspartsdirect.com which is the only place you can look up and Kenmore brand appliances.

It is very unlikely to have both the ice maker and water inlet valve defective at the same time. I woulds make sure the ice maker has proper water supply. It should fill for 3.6 seconds and have 3/4 of an inch of water across the the complete tray. If it does not you cold have a plugged saddle or inlet valve restricting water supply. See videos below.
