My dryer will only run for about 30 seconds, and will not run at all if there’s more than one article of clothing in there.

It sounds like your motor may be shutting off on an internal overload. You may have a bad motor. You will have this symptom because the motor starts at high amprege and then shuts off on an overload. When the overload rests it will come back on for 30 seconds.
