Hi. A burning smell could be from a few different things. The most common would be a lint fire inside the unit. Lint builds up over time in the bottom of most dryers on and around the element or flame tube. This lint will ignite and usually contains itself inside the unit. Check to make sure it has not melted or damaged any components. Also, the customer may have put something in the dryer that stuck on to the drum or heat vent causing a smell. Another thing that could cause a smell would be if the cust recently painted or stained something in the house with a gas dryer. This will put off a smell when a gas dryer runs. Make sure your airflow is good and the vent is clean and not too long.
