Deep-fried and crispy spring rolls. You don’t need to run out to buy fancy wrappers, or go the lazy man’s route of buying the prepackaged stuff. It sounds intimidating, but have no fear, your sandwich bread is here to the rescue.
LifeHacker found an awesome video from Food & Wine; shown below, Justin Chapple know what’s up and walks you through on how to make deep-fried spring rolls using ordinary bread as the wrapper. Who would’ve thought? And, you just know this is going to be oh so good. It’s not even fair.
If you have a ton of bread you don’t know what to do with, deep-fry it. While this isn’t always the healthiest go-to option, it certainly is delicious, and the food baby’s gotta eat. The feasting Holidays are right around the corner, so who’s counting calories anyhow? That’s what New Years resolutions are for.
Now that we’ve got that out of the way, let’s get to the good stuff.
All you have to do is trim off the crusts of your white bread—I’m sure wheat bread will be just as delicious too. If you don’t want to waste the crusts, you can always dry them out, and turn them into crunchy croutons, or use ‘em as an ingredient in your famous stuffing. Next, flatten each bread slice super thin with a rolling pin. Plop your filling in the middle of the wrapper, add a drop of water on the edge of the bread, and roll it up to seal the deal. Since these things won’t take too long to fry up, it’s a good idea to make sure your fillings are already cooked as opposed to raw. Finally, pop the spring roll into a pre-heated fryer or a skillet with a bunch of oil, and fry until a golden, crispy brown. As usual with fried foods, make sure to wipe off your rolls with papers towels to absorb excess oil.
Now get this, you don’t even have to fill up your spring roll with the normal spring roll fillings. Why not get a little crazy tonight and add Nutella and bananas instead? Once they’re out of the deep fryer, sprinkle some powdered sugar on top and you have instant dessert.
Or, you can even add in your favorite pizza fillings for your own deep-fried pizza rolls.
Don’t you see? You can add anything you want inside.
Breakfast, lunch, and dinner approved. Yum.
