The next time you have to peel a potato, forget about the vegetable peeler. Potato prep can be a time-consuming process, but it doesn’t have to be. Culinary website, CHOW, shows you how to efficiently peel a potato in seconds. Cook your potatoes (skin intact) in boiling water on your stove top first—like you normally would. Then, quickly submerge your potatoes in a cool bath consisting of ice and water; 5-10 seconds should do the trick. Your potatoes will still probably be hot, so use caution when handling. Then, grasp each side of the potato and make a short twist in the middle with your hands. Those pesky potato peels will slide right off. The secret behind this method is the ice bath not only shocks the spud to stop overcooking, but helps to release the skin. The next time you have a family get together, this will be perfect for your potato needs especially if you have a ton of potatoes to peel. By leaving the skins on during the boiling process, the starch stays in, and no extra water will be absorbed by the tubers… preventing mushy spuds or a watery potato salad.
