The other day, we found the most amazing project from Youtuber Shake the Future??and, it??s the perfect gift for those techies in your life?? Are you aware it??s possible to fuse glass in your microwave? Yes, the one in your kitchen! That one??the one you use to make popcorn and EasyMac in. It??s absolutely incredible! So, why not use this fantastic discovery to make a glass flash drive stick? Here??s what you??ll need:
- A glass cutter
- A sheet of glass in your desired color (make sure it is proper glass toy can fuse)
- A USB flash drive??without the case
- Foam posterboard or thick fiber paper
- A microwave kiln
- An X-Acto knife
- A thin wooden dowel
- A microwave
- A glue gun with corresponding glue sticks
- To begin, cut a piece of poster board just slightly larger than the flash drive. Shave off the paper part on one side of the board??so you??ve got one side with paper and one side with foam or fiber.
- Cut out 2 pieces of glass a bit bigger than the poster board and place one on the base of your microwave kiln.
- Put the poster board piece in the middle of the glass piece, then move it so the USB port (the bit that goes inside your computer) will be sticking out of the glass. The glass will melt around the form, making a slot for the flash drive.
- Center the second piece of glass on top of the first, centering as before and put the base in your microwave before placing the lid over top. Microwave as directed and allow the glass to cool properly before removing from the kiln. This may take a while.
- Use the dowel to scrape out the poster board. It helps to do this by the sink.
- Squirt some glue inside the glass case and slide the USB stick into the case, with the port sticking out the end.
Note: If you can't find a glass cutting tool or don't want to buy one, most glass shops or hardware stores will do it for you. If you're doing it at home, make sure you wear protective eyewear!
