How to Measure for Your New Refrigerator

Perhaps you’re in the market to buy a new fridge. Even if you aren’t, it’s always good to refresh yourself of this info for down the road, or who knows, you could help a friend who needs your expertise! There are a few key important steps you should take before buying a refrigerator and installing one in your home. What could be worse than having to saw off part of your cabinets because it doesn’t fit? You don’t want to go to those extremes, and we don’t want you too, either. Here are some measurements to take into consideration: Depth, Width & Height You have a large gaping space right in the middle of your kitchen. Take heed of its measurements. From top to bottom, left to right and back to front. It’s important to measure it a few times to make sure you have the absolute correct dimensions. Sometimes measurements are not the same all away across—so may sure that your width dimension (for example) is the same from front to the back for accuracy. It’s All About the Door Take notice of your door, especially how far it opens up. An average refrigerator door opens up at 90 degrees or more. So while you’re out and about shopping for your new icebox, take a look at the specifics to know what you’re in for. Don’t forget the hinges. Make sure your new refrigerator will have 2” worth or space on each side. If not, you’ll have to adjust accordingly such as bringing your fridge forward to make up for the space. Also, you’ll want to take into consideration if your door will block walking paths, other doors, closets and so forth, depending on your kitchen setup. Adequate Space For proper airflow and ventilation, a general rule of thumb is to allow 1” of space all around your refrigerator, including the top. Though, your manufacturer will have exact specifics for your model. Just don’t overlook this important factor. Oh, and one more thing…measure your hallways, doorframes, main entry and anywhere else your refrigerator will voyage through in your home.  We don’t want your fridge to be stuck outside because it’s unable to fit! By the way—make life easier, and consider storing these dimensions in your phone so you have everything you could need while you’re at the store. Photo by DC Interiors & Renovations | Flickr
