When it’s time to replace your old appliance, (check out these tips before you purchase a new one), consider donating it to your local charity. Though, we do recommend researching the proper disposal methods by preplanning what is best for you and your family’s needs. If your old appliance is still running, use it as an opportunity to help another out during this upcoming holiday season instead of tossing your appliance into the trash. Consider donating your used and working appliances to charity such as the Salvation Army, Goodwill, or Habitat for Humanity. Not only are you partaking in a form of recycling, but you are also helping out another person/family and our environment. If your local charities are unable to take your used appliances, snap a few pictures of your fridge (or whatever appliance it is) and post a free ad on Craigslist or even Freecycle. Many people are looking to refurbish/repair appliances and are even willing to haul it away. Posting an ad on these types of sites are beneficial, especially if your appliance is not in working condition to donate. If you are unable to donate or post an ad, when you go to buy your new dishwasher, ask the retailer if they offer a recycling program. Some companies offer such a program that includes hauling away your old, unusable appliance. Also, if you must recycle your appliance on your own, make sure to review your area’s rules and regulations.
