We like saving energy and money—who doesn’t? We’ve put together 5 tips for your washer that are easy to follow…so easy, that you’re able to start to today…or whenever it is you do the laundry next.
Avoid hot water, use cold instead Heating up water takes almost 100% of the energy it takes to run your washing machine. That’s a ton of usage for hot water. If you’re not dealing with specific stains, cold water will do just fine—and, will save you energy, which ultimately leads to more money in your pocket.
Make sure it’s full Your washer will use the same energy regardless if you have 1 item or a ton of items in it. Make it count, and fill up your washing machine. Though, don’t take it to the extreme and stuff your clothes washer to the max, just wash full loads to maximize your energy use.
Wash Your washer How ironic of a statement is that? It’s true though – after a while, you may begin to smell a terrible mildew/mold/bacteria smell. Bleh. Though, that’s normal to a certain extent if you haven’t washed it in a while. We have talked about washing your washer before with vinegar, but always make sure to refer to your manufacture instructions first.
High-speed is the way to go When it comes to your washer at least. By using the high-speed cycle, you remove more moisture from your clothes. With less moisture, you inadvertently have less drying time, ultimately leading to less energy usage.
Keep that door open If you have a front load washer, keep the door open. Your front loader has a super-tight seal. If you keep it closed with water in it, hello mildew and bacteria party. It’s the perfect condition for them. Keep it fresh, and allow the door to be open—it doesn’t need to be open all the way, just enough for some air flow.
