5 Ways to Get Rid of Smelly Ice Cubes

It’s safe to make an assumption that most of us have experienced a foul-tasting ice cube before. Definitely an unpleasant experience, there are a handful of reasons as to why your ice cubes aren’t what they should be tasting like. Whether you have an ice maker or use ice cube trays, we’ll discuss 5 ways to help you solve your problem. Clean & Change Your Bin or Trays If you have an ice maker, the plastic bin can absorb odors over time, and transfer the smell to your cubes.  While you perform regular refrigerator cleaning maintenance, go ahead and clean out your bin with warm water, baking soda and vinegar. It’s also recommended to replace your ice bin every 2-3 years. If you use ice trays, odors can still be absorbed. Make sure to clean your tray periodically. Feel free to soak your trays in a vinegar and water solution for a few hours to sanitize and disinfect. Remove Smelly Foods Not to get too much into the technical side of things, but your freezer and refrigerator share the same airflow. Inspect your fridge and freezer for foul smelling foods, clean out your unit, and place some baking soda inside both compartments to absorb odors. Also, if you do have strong, odorous foods, make sure to store them in tightly sealed containers to help avoid odor absorption. Use Your Ice Old, stale ice that has been sitting in the freezer will absorb odors. Use and/or change your ice cubes so your ice maker can use fresh water. Apply the same principle to the trays. Replace Your Water Filter A dirty water filter could be the culprit to blame. Many times, your water filter is overlooked—as your ice maker and refrigerator are working just fine. Though, a filthy filter isn’t filtering, but is in fact doing the opposite, resulting in smelly cubes. Refer to your manufacturers instructions, but generally speaking, you’ll want to replace the water filter every 6 months. Look into Your Water Supply Sulfur and various minerals in your water supply can make for unpleasant cubes. Look into investing into an in-line water filter for pure, odor-free water.
