When I was living alone during college, my fridge was always mostly empty with just some junk food cramped in there. Back then I remember thinking how refrigerators should be smaller in general as there was simply way too much space. But boy was I wrong!
As I grew older and built a family, I realized we never have enough refrigerator space at all. In fact I started thinking about how we could optimize the space in the refrigerator to get all the stuff we need in there to fit and keep fresh. So, let me share a few of the tips I used for my family’s fridge.
Fridge Is Colder In The Back
Most people probably know this, it’s easy to feel. But I also think most families don’t really take full advantage of this. Personally I use the back of the fridge for food that needs to be kept really cold such as milk, while the front is reserved for the stuff that won’t be in there long, like last night’s dinner leftovers.
Take Stuff Out
This is another common one. I think so many people just cram anything in their fridge. Things like ketchup or butter simply don’t belong in the fridge and taking them to the pantry instead can greatly help you save space. Putting vegetables in the fridge, such as onions or tomatoes are also a mistake, these items are absolutely pantry material, so put them there. They will keep more fresh, the way they are meant to be.
Hard Stuff Up, Drippy Stuff Down
I used to do this all the time. Take the protein out of the bag first and put it on top shelf, then proceed to stack up the lower shelves. More than once this ended up with the juices dripping out of the foil and spilling all over other food, which can be hard to clean or even turn some of your food inedible. Keep the stuff that drips on the bottom shelf.
