As Benjamin Franklin said it, “a penny saved is a penny earned.” He couldn’t be more right! It’s camping season— and what better time than to make your own penny stove? You now have a reason (besides luck) to be on the lookout for “heads up” pennies on the ground. Editorial director of “Maker Media,” Gareth Branwyn, found Mark Jurey’s fantastic DIY instruction guide to make your very own penny can stove.
While there are precautions and potential safety hazards to take into consideration (adults only please!), the penny can stove is a nifty concept that really works by using 3 specific types of beverage cans, irrigation stakes, bailing wire and dryer vent tubing. The basic mechanical concept of the penny stove is simple. By burning the burner’s fuel in the middle and outer ring, it heats up the cup; the fuel runs underneath the penny into the cup which results in boiling. It is a perfect quick setup for your next camping trip for a nice warm meal. If you’re in a DIYer mood, check out “Make” for the complete instruction guide to create your own penny can stove.
