DIY-Off-Grid-Stove-Oven-Gas

You never know when disaster will strike, so it’s a good idea to always be prepared. Perhaps you’re not worried about that kind of thing, and you just wish you could bring an oven with you for camping or tailgating. Or, maybe you want to live off grid, so you’re looking at how to make an off grid stove on the cheap. Whatever your reasons are, you have to admit, a scrap part oven that’s portable and runs off a propane tank could fit anyone’s needs.

Instructables user More Cowbell did just that. Between canning, his wife wanting to make soap again, and electric stoves sucking the energy out of generators, decided to build a an off grid oven and stove. The stove/oven should be easy to use, portable, and small enough for practical storage. With several gas burners and an oven to bake pies and casseroles, Cowbell built his off grid oven with mostly scrap parts.

Finding a stove that measured 20x18x21 for $50 was just what the oven enthusiast was looking for. He found the oven in a camper located in a junkyard that had no electoral connections and was completely mechanical. After ripping the oven out of the camper, a cabinet box was made with scrap plywood, including a extra room for storage underneath the oven. Then, to keep the baseboard off the ground, old couch feet were attached to the bottom of the board. The stove was then attached to the cabinet with screws in each corner. To help make the stove portable, Cowbell added handles on the sides of the oven.

To add a propane tank to the oven, he drilled an access hole and flared the copper line and attached the line to the burner fuel rail. The propane set up consists of a low-pressure regulator and flexible propane line—they were salved off a gas grill. The long line is beneficial to get gas away from the open flame, too.

With plenty of space to accommodate 3 pots, a pan in the oven, and extra storage on the bottom, the oven reportedly works really well.

You’ll be prepared for camping, storms, or your new way of life on the cheap with scrap parts.
